Now, to be fair to Mark Sanford, he really knew his own mind. Years before the then South Carolina governor cheated on his wife, he insisted that they remove the word "faithful" from their wedding vows, which you'd think would be a red flag to Mrs Sanford but apparently none of her girlfriends took her aside for a chat about the importance of language, so the wedding went ahead. Cut to 20 years later and Mark is going missing for a whole weekend (as in, law enforcement is notified levels of missing) leading to claims by his staff that he is "hiking the Appalachian Trail" (which is in the USA) when he is in fact in Argentina (decidedly not in the USA) with his mistress. Amid his tearful confessions of infidelity and oddly personal interviews, Sanford's wife filed for divorce and impeachment proceedings were begun (though ultimately dropped). He became engaged to and then split with his mistress. His presidential hopes were quashed after it became clear that he'd used public funds on one of his love-jaunts to South America. But the most entertaining part about this scandal was the bald-faced moxie of Sanford himself, a man who was happy to lie consistently about his whereabouts and activities and then just sort of shrug cheerfully whenever he was found out. His notoriously weird press conferences were even thought to have partly inspired a sex scandal storyline on the sitcom Parks & Recreation.
