5. Get Drunk Quicker, Order The Fizz

Far be it from me to encourage you do go out and get paralytically drunk, but these are tough economic times and sometimes it helps to be able to get buzzed on a budget. Well, it turns out that not all drinks are created equal, and some will get your drunker than others, even if they all contain the same amount of alcohol. Studies have shown that both carbonated and sugar-free drinks will get you sloshed much more quickly than their still, sugary counterparts. Studies have also shown that drinking a fizzy alcoholic beverage will leave your blood alcohol content (BACs) significantly higher more quickly than if you had a flat drink. In one study, participants were given a shot of vodka neat, mixed with still water and mixed with sparkling water. Obviously, the straight shot came out on top, but if you don't think you can stomach that, then the sparkling water was absorbed much faster than the still. As well as fizz, the perfect mixer will also contain artificial sweeteners. A 2012 paper found that breath alcohol content was as much as 18% higher in men who had consumed a "diet" alcoholic drink as opposed to the sugary version. This could well be because diet drinks may be emptied from the stomach more quickly, allowing the alcohol in them to be absorbed faster. Vodka diet coke, anyone?
