9 Science Videos That Will Make You Question Everything

1. Is My Red The Same As Your Red? - Vsauce

The question of "is my red the same as your red" is not just a question about colour, it is throwing into sharp relief the string of paranoia that threads itself throughout most of these videos - how alone are we in our own minds?

This childish question that has kicked off many a pub debate asks whether, even though we both perceive a certain wavelength of light and have learnt to call it red, there is no real way of checking whether we are seeing the same thing at all. Similarly, you would never be able to convey the sensation of pain to someone incapable of feeling it, nor do you know whether the soundwaves that you interpret as speech, sound the same to everyone.

Interestingly, there are some who think that this is not a fundamental barrier, but just a limit of our language. Language, again, is just a way of translating the electrical signals in our brains, and the limited number of words and sounds that we currently use might just be insufficient to convey abstract ideas such as colour. It could be that, given the precisely perfect combination of sounds, it might be possible to make a person literally "see" red in the same way you do.

Until then, we are alone in our own minds.
