The theory goes that there are perhaps an infinite number of universes out there, all self contained like the bubbles in a foam, and all governed by different physical laws. Now, we're aware of this universe because the physical laws that govern it also happen to allow life to arise, but in an infinite multiverse, this can happen an infinite number of times, perhaps in an infinite number of ways.

Seems pretty esoteric, but scientists think that they might have actually found evidence that another one of these universes has bumped into ours, by studying the fluctuations in the Cosmic Microwave Background.
