You think, therefore you are.

That's pretty much as far as you can get in terms of certainty in this world. You know that you are conscious, just by the very virtue of being able to think it, but there is no guarantee that everybody and everything else around you is the same.

Our ideas of conciousness are not exactly complete. We don't know for sure what causes it, why it occurs or even how extensive it is through living and non-living minds. We also know that it is possible for something, say and Artificial Intelligence, to present the illusion of conciousness - drawing conclusions, formulating ideas and communicating effectively - without (as far as we know) being consciously aware of doing it.
