9 Scientific Explanations For Famous Bible Stories

4. Walking On Water

According to the bible, Jesus can walk on water. The more astute amongst you will have noticed that it's physically impossible to walk on a (non-Newtonian) liquid, so perhaps the water was more of a solid?

Like ice, for instance.

We're not talking an entire frozen lake, not even olde worlde people would have fallen for that, but there are some experts that think that this amazing feat could have been made possible by a phenomenon known as "springs ice".

This occurs when warm salt water runs into cold freshwater, much like the conditions on the Sea of Galilee at the time. It produces small patches of thick ice that are strong enough for a man to stand on.

There are a couple of problems with this theory, however, chief of which being that Peter joined Jesus for a bit of a paddle too, meaning that he would have noticed the ice and either kept schtum, or thought it was all part of the miracle. There's also the part where he begins to sink due to his lack of faith - but maybe he just slipped off the edge of the icy patch.

The stormy weather also undermines the ice patch theory a bit, as calm waters are required to create the effect. But, as we weren't there, we just can't be sure whether the storm or the magic-dude-walking-on-water is the least accurate bit of the story.
