9 Times The Hitchhikers’ Guide To The Galaxy Accurately Predicted The Future
6. GPP (Genuine People Personalities)
Genuine People Personalities is a concept dreamt up by the eternally inept Sirius Cybernetics Corporation that is meant to imbue machines, computers and even automatic doors with personality and emotions. Unfortunately, and true to incompetent form, the technology largely resulted in clinically depressed robots and unbearably smug doors.
Okay, so Douglas Adams is definitely not the only person to predict AI, not by a long shot. However anyone who has ever been sassed by Siri would argue that there is a bit of technology with a serious attitude problem.
In another stride closer to emotionally unbalanced AI, a researcher at Clemson University claims to have taught a computer to feel both trust and regret. Seeing as the personality prototypes are largely programmed to feel human emotions such as "loneliness, fear, depression, pain, and paranoia", we'd say that "regret" fits in pretty neatly with that lot. If that lot gets you down then, fear not, because the Japanese have reportedly invented a robot named Pepper designed to attend to your emotional needs, nawww.
