9 Ways Science Is Changing The Future Of Warfare

2. Artificial Intelligence

One of the major issues in introducing artificial intelligence into modern warfare is how do you teach a robot right from wrong? How would it know which targets to select, or even which people to save and which to leave behind in an evacuation situation? At the moment, robots used in warfare can be more comfortably classed as "automatic" as opposed to intelligent, responding to programming and instructions by a human operator. Fully autonomous lethal robots are currently prohibited by the US military, but as AI technology advances, we might have to start teaching robots morals. Many experts believe that we will eventually make the move from the odd armed drone, to fully autonomous artificial soldiers. On the plus side, a computer can potentially process much more information than a human and make the right decision much faster, plus of course we wouldn't have to endanger actual humans on the front line. But many argue that we couldn't possibly hope for a robot to understand the complexities of combat, life and death decisions or even taking human life.
