Alton Towers: Ranking The Rollercoasters From Worst To Best

1. The Smiler

Having opened on May the 31st of this year, Alton Towers' new installment - The Smiler - is undoubtedly the best current rollercoaster in the park. Labelled as a 'correctional instrument', the Smiler is themed as a device that forces its riders to wear a permanent, almost psychotic smile as a result of the ride experience. Boasting a 'world's first' fourteen inversions (meaning it has at least three more inversions than any other ride in the world), the £18m Gerstlauer offering is 2 minutes and 45 seconds and 1.17 miles of relentless action. Unlike most other rollercoasters, 'relentless' is indeed the key word. The only real break that you, as a rider, will get once the carriage leaves the platform and makes its first descent is a slow-paced vertical climb which, in itself, gets the heart pumping pretty rapidly. Other memorable parts of the ride include a unique vertical roll almost as soon as the carriage exits the platform (before even the first, bog-standard ascent occurs), two consecutive dive loops, two corkscrews and a batwing element. All in all, the Smiler is a thrilling experience that any rollercoaster enthusiast simply must get round to having. Have you been to Alton Towers recently? Do you think this list is correct? Or are you going to Alton Towers soon and, if so, has the list helped you to look forward to the rollercoasters? Have your say below!
