Banksy: 7 Great Artistic Achievements So Far

6.Simpsons Couch Gag

One of the more memorable things The Simpsons has done in the past five of its twenty five year run was when Matt Groening and 20th Century Fox acquired Banksy to direct the couch gag for the a October 2010 episode of The Simpsons. It was an unexpected collaboration, the longest running animated television series under the wing of the UK's shadowy artist. Taking full advantage of the fact that Simpsons animation was done in Korea,Banksy penned one of the darkest couch gags in Simpsons history. During the extra long intro, we witnessed enslaved Korean animators tirelessly painting Simpson animation cells as whipped panda bears pulled carts of Bart Simpson dolls stuffed with the fur of kittens thrown into a wood chipper. Slaves used the tongues of decapitated dolphins to glue the boxes of Simpson merchandise together and the cherry on this motor oil sundae was a starved unicorn in chains. The horn of the mythical beast was being used as a hole puncher for Simpson DVDs, a purpose for such a fantasy creature that only someone with such a wicked sense of humor like Banksy could come up with. Banksy adding his signature morbid touch to such an iconic series like The Simpsons was an amazing pastiche of taking the people who make your favorite cartoon for granted. After the couch gag aired numerous representatives from both 20th Century Fox and Korean Animation Studios openly spoke about the fair conditions of their animators and the good relationship they have working on The Simpsons. Of course there aren't really any chained up unicorns in a slave compound of Simpson animators but it was still a fun satire that only Banksy could provide and is well worth checking out if you haven't already seen it.
