Every Stephen King Novel Ranked Worst To Best

45. Rose Madder

Stephen King in It: Chapter Two
Viking

Rose Madder really could have been one of King's best works if he didn't try to mesh the book's two completely different stories together.

On the one hand, there's an abused married woman who makes the decision to escape her violent husband, and on the other there's a magic painting which acts as a portal to another world. Neither story mixes well with the other, and though the novel starts off as a compelling story about a woman escaping her unhappy life, it loses its momentum when King decides to add a dash of fantasy.
