3. Kreacher’s Tale – The Deathly Hallows
Chapter Synopsis: Kreacher reveals the truth about Regulus Black.
Regulus Black was always a bit of an enigma. In The Order of the Phoenix, Sirius mentions that his brother used to be a Death Eater and that he was killed on Voldemort’s orders after he tried to back out of his new role.
As it turns out, Regulus was actually a hero. Having discovered the truth about Voldemort’s Horcruxes, he hunted down Slytherin’s Locket and managed to steal it at the cost of his own life. Kreacher, meanwhile, was given orders to destroy the Horcrux. But despite his best efforts, he was unable to carry out his young master’s final wishes.
Kreacher recounts this tale with a great deal of emotion. After all these years, he’s still distraught about Regulus’s death. In a single chapter, he goes from being one of the most loathsome characters in the series to one of the most pitiful. And such a transition is a remarkable piece of character development from Rowling.
