Harry Potter: 10 Most Underrated Chapters

2. The Egg And The Eye – The Goblet Of Fire

Chapter Synopsis: In the dead of night, Harry tries to solve the golden egg’s clue without getting caught by the mad caretaker.

Harry’s late-night adventures are always a highlight. With the Second Task looming, Harry decides to act upon Cedric’s advice. So, armed with his Invisibility Cloak and the Marauder’s Map, he enters the Prefects’ Bathroom and tries to figure out the egg’s clue.

‘The Egg and the Eye’ is the only time in the entire series we get to see this unique bathroom. There’s a giant pool, a diving board, golden taps, magical bubbles, white marble, and even a chandelier. But these pleasantries soon vanish when Harry leaves the bathroom.

After getting his leg stuck in a trick step, Harry has several close shaves with Snape and Filch. And despite being concealed beneath the Invisibility Cloak, he’s nearly caught on several occasions.

There’s also a brilliant clue in this chapter. Whilst looking at the Marauder’s Map, Harry spots the name ‘Barty Crouch’ moving around in Snape’s office. Of course, Harry assumes it’s Barty Crouch Senior, but it’s actually Barty Crouch Junior, who then turns up disguised as Mad-Eye Moody. It’s an ingenious nod to the end of the novel that doesn’t get enough credit.
