But that patent we mentioned at the beginning, its for a new technology for connecting your headphones, which may appear in the iPhone 7. This has a 2mm diameter, and would need a specific headphone connector. The current jack is about 3.5mm and with this new design, youll have to get a new pair of headphones. Where's The Proof?: Maybe not, patents are applied for everyday by tech companies all over the world and some of them don't even get used. Apple is not known as one of the most secretive technology company for not just any reason. Information is so sacredly guarded that Apples own engineers have no clue what their peers are working on. This work may be in the pipeline but it could be for future products maybe even for the iPhone 8 or 9! But, If it does appear in the next iPhone, It will be to do with Apples quest for the thinnest phone. A 3.5mm jack would be more than half of the rumoured 6mm design. It may also have something to do with Apple spending $3.2 billion on its accusation of Beats and with that in mind could create an exclusive adapter, some are dubbing it the 'Lightning Headphones'.
