Skull Island: Reign Of Kong Review - 7 Ways It’s Awesome
5. It Probably Has The Best Ride Queue At Universal... And Beyond
From the point where you board the truck, the ride itself is relatively tame. Apart from a few gross creatures, a rough encounter with Dinosaurs and Kong it's just an adventure ride. The queue however is an attraction in itself.
The queue for Skull Island: Reign of Kong is arguably one of the best of any Universal theme park attraction, if not the world. Mike West declared that this would be the longest attraction Universal had ever built and that he included the queuing area as part of that. West has gone out of his way to make it an experience itself.
The detail that has gone into it is unreal. The queue begins with the 8th Wonder Expedition base camp outside a temple. The radio plays in the background as you walk past all the equipment that the team have brought with them to explore the island. When walking around it looks like a serious version of the Jungle Cruise (no jokes here though).
Next you enter the native temples. Covered in skulls and filled with dark corners there are small screens to project moving displays. There are gaps in which scare-actors dressed as the inhabitants of Skull Island lurk to jump and give you a fright.
The showpiece of the queue is the room with the witch. As you enter you spot the witch at the back of the room and you make your way around it until you are finally face to face with her. She is an impressive animatronic who chants, causing the lights on the walls to flicker and the suspenseful music to build. The crowds will likely move slowly through this room as most guests will want to take video and photos of her.
After you have made your way through the temple you will come out into the loading area for the massive trucks. This has been designed to look like the area the expedition are using to load and venture into the the depths of the island. There are curiosities galore for you to look at.
With Halloween Horror Nights each year, Universal know how to put on a walk through horror attraction and they have certainly created a slightly less scary version for Reign of Kong.
We queued for 40 minutes to experience it in full, despite there being an almost empty single ride line. Trust us, it was worth every minute in line.
