Yves Saint Laurent: 10 Most Definitive Collections

1.1988 - Tribute to Vincent Van Gogh

One of Saint-Laurent€™s final tributes to art was Impressionism€™s Vincent Van Gogh. One of his most colour-laden collections due to being centred around Van Gogh€™s irises and sunflower paintings, which utilised vivid yellows and sunburst oranges, and deep, but yet delicate purples and lilacs. As power-dressing hit it€™s peak in the late 1980s, YSL created couture with round-necked collared jackets with shoulder pads made the top line ruler straight, matching the crisp line of the knee kissing pencil skirt. Each jacket with it€™s striking embroidery required around 670 hours of work to mirror Van Gogh€™s legendary pieces. Yves Saint-Laurent pushed boundaries and made people question whether they liked what he had created, in a time when it was unthinkable to shockable. But above all YSL has created clothes that have inspired generations of designers, and sporned replicas and imitations ever since. Not bad for a guy who said he wished he€™d invented something as simple as the denim jean.
