Yves Saint Laurent: 10 Most Definitive Collections

2. 1981 - Henri Matisse inspired collection

For Winter 1981 YSL once again paid homage to one arts greats, Henri Matisse, dedicating the entire collection to his paintings and life€™s work. Block coloured power dressing Smoking suits, typical on the 1980s, had double buttoned front and loose fitted pants, as well as steel grey with knee-length skirts and fox fur stoles. The power suit also had a Matisse fix with long length skirts in black silk with velvet embroiled jackets and oversized fur timed in jet black. Eveningwear saw the most Matisse inspired looks, with a burgundy red bodice and purple panel to the knee with applique panels channelling Matisse€™s unique brush strokes across canvas. The overall look resembling an abstract floral ensemble. The collection also housed YSL€™s taffeta €œbubble€ dresses in jet black. The Bubble dress has a somewhat more editorial look over a commercial. Having a pussy-bow tied around the neck, then ballooning out down to the waist and tied once again creating a unique silhouette.
