There are few better ways to introduce yourself to a new league than with an important goal in your debut. If you’re able to follow this up with a celebration guaranteed to wind up the fans of every other club in the league, then you’re well on your way to legend status.

Jurgen Klinsmann had torn up trees for his country and snagged trophies with Inter Milan. He came to England with baggage, however, in the form of a reputation for diving, considered a particularly egregious sin by the nation’s pious Proper Football Men.

At his league debut away to Sheffield Wednesday, the striker was met with a storm of boos from the home fans, some of whom held up diving scorecards. It was written in the stars, then, that he’d open his account against them with a leaping header, which he celebrated with an expertly taken (and well practised) swan dive to the turf. It didn’t silence his critics, but it gave them something to laugh about.

Klinsmann stayed in North London for just one season, but his goal scoring exploits and his effervescent humour meant he remains a beloved figure around Tottenham to this day.
