7. Robbie Fowler Crosses The Line

Let’s start by saying: Robbie Fowler’s line-snorting celebration is neither big nor clever. For a public figure who is, whether he likes it or not, a role model to be pretending to indulge in narcotics on a football pitch is a daft thing to do. All the same, though, it made for an iconic sight in an already-incident packed Merseyside derby.

Fowler was in fine form for Liverpool, and unsurprisingly rival fans were eager to bring him back down. The banter of the day was that the striker was a cocaine user - Fowler played with a nasal strip, seemingly the basis for this jibe, which caught on in spite of a lack of any real evidence.

Liverpool’s number fought banter with banter, and after scoring at Stanley Park, fell to his knees and simulated the very act he had been accused of by the baying Everton fans. This did not go down well at all.

Fowler was fined a then-record £32,000, and Reds manager Gerard Houllier made matters worse by claiming his player was, in fact, pretending to eat grass. It was an understandable reaction from Fowler, but one he came to regret pretty soon after.
