Few Premier League stars have come under the same tabloid scrutiny as erstwhile-Manchester United and England captain Wayne Rooney. And while sometimes the spotlight placed on him is deeply unfair, other times there are things he could do to avoid the level of criticism he gets.

Things, for example, like refraining from playfighting with Phil Bardsley in his kitchen. The image of Rooney flat on the floor after an errant jab from the then-Stoke City player was perfect fodder for the media, and while Rooney was unlucky, both that the fist connected and that the clip of the “fight” made it online, there’s no denying he was being a bit silly.

He made up for it in record time, though. That Sunday, a loose ball from Nabil Bentaleb gifted Rooney dangerous possession. Working his way through the Tottenham backline, Rooney put the ball in the net, then celebrated with a flurry of punches before flopping impressively onto his back, as though sparked out once again.

This was just the ticket for Rooney, whose hilarious celebration is now just as well remembered as the incident it mocks. Too bad he can’t base celebrations around some of his other unsavoury public antics.
