10 Biggest Controversies In UFC History

4. Grease-Gate (UFC 94)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eQ0AhaiUtKc UFC 94€™s main event saw the company€™s first ever super-fight as active Lightweight Champion B.J Penn challenged active Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre for his 170-lbs belt. The two had fought three years prior in what was essentially a #1 contenders bout and George had outworked and outconditioned the super-tough Penn en route to a nail-bitingly close split-decision victory. The two legends of the sport had a score to settle and would meet again €“ this time as world champions. To say that anticipation was high for this fight would be understating it. Leading up to the fight it was believed that if Penn was able to get St-Pierre down to the mat and utilise his off-the-chain Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu game he would eventually catch the Canadian in a submission, while if Georges was able to keep it on the feet his superior athleticism would let him out-strike the Hawaiian. The fight went much the same way as the first fight €“ B.J Penn€™s suspect fitness was overwhelmed by the high intensity nature of GSP€™s fighting and eventually he was forced to retire at the start of the fifth round. After the fight, B.J Penn very publically accused Georges of cheating, suspecting the reigning Welterweight champ of having greased himself up before the fight to ensure that he was able to slip out of Penn€™s submissions. It didn€™t end with unsportsmanlike accusations though €“ Penn took his case to the state athletic commission who eventually ruled that Georges was innocent.
