Lawrence Phillips was a star running back for the Nebraska Cornhuskers, with his raw potential wielding a 1,722 rushing yard total in his second season, though he was arrested and suspended for beating up his girlfriend, a theme of domestic violence that would plague him. Despite the controversy, Phillips went to the Rams as high as sixth overall pick in the 1996 Draft, but his career never took off, and after two years, his team grew sick of the problems he was causing. He played eight games duing one season with the 49ers but only picked up 144 rushing yards. After retiring, Phillips was jailed for 31 years on multiple accounts of assault, false imprisonment, car theft and is currently suspected of murdering his cellmate who was found choked to death in April 2015.
