10 Biggest World Cup Upsets Of All Time

5. Cameroon 1 - 0 Argentina (1990)

The biggest World Cup upset in African football history, few could've predicted that a team of Cameroonian journeymen would best the Diego Maradona inspired team that had clinched the trophy just four years prior.

Before this game, the lasting impacts that African football had made on the world cup were Algeria's win over West Germany in 1982 which narrowly missed out on this list and slightly less impressively, the bizarre antics of the Zaire team in 1974.

When André Kana-Biyik was sent off just after the hour mark, what was an assumed win now appeared to be a foregone conclusion. Apparently, no one told Cameroon this, however, and they continued causing problems for the heavy favourites. Just over five minutes later, François Omam-Biyik, younger brother of the man sent off, scored the winner to cement his and the teams' place in African football folklore.

Argentina would recover from the setback and go on to reach the final of the tournament, but in exceeding all expectations the Cameroon side had earned a place in the heart of all neutrals spectating.
