10 Biggest World Cup Upsets Of All Time

4. West Germany 3 - 2 Hungary (1954)

Such have the tables turned in the context of the modern game, that it would be a bigger upset today if Hungary got over on Germany in the World Cup. In 1954, however, Hungary were the top-ranked team in the world and had been expected to win the tournament hosted in Switzerland.

After all, the Hungarian side had a convincing claim to possessing the best player in the world at the time, with Real Madrid legend Ferenc Puskás leading the line for the 'Magic Magyars'. The Hungarians had already beaten West Germany during the group stage of the tournament, drubbing the inexperienced side 8-3 with star striker Sándor Kocsis scoring four.

The final, which has since been referred to as the Miracle in Bern, saw Hungary go 2-0 up in the first 8 minutes of regular time, leading spectators to believe that the title would be heading to Budapest and not Bonn.

The West German team rallied back, however, and goals from Max Morlock and Helmut Rahn saw the team secure a historic victory against all the odds. To make matters worse for Gusztáv Sebes side, the match would prove to be Hungary's only loss between 1950 and 1956.
