3. Evander Holyfield Vs Mike Tyson II (28/06/97)
We're gonna change pace a little bit with this one.
The last few fights have all been examples of either compelling contests or underdogs shocking the world. This fight, however, was just straight up shocking and probably the most controversial thing we've ever seen take place inside of a ring.
Off the back of that aforementioned loss to Buster Douglas, Mike Tyson was forced to rebuild his career. By 1996 he'd managed to reclaim both the WBA and WBC Heavyweight titles and that long awaited clash with Evander Holyfield was now about to finally come to fruition.
Tyson would lose that clash, along with his WBA belt and he was clearly p*ssed about it coming into the rematch.
Sensing his place at the top of the heap was slowly being stolen away from him and clearly angered by Holyfield's apparent headbutts throughout this (and the last) contest, Tyson made the decision to incredibly bite the champ's ear towards the end of the third round.
Tyson spat out the piece of ear he'd taken away and astoundingly the fight was allowed to continue, with Tyson being deducted a mere 2 points.
This clearly didn't deter 'Iron Mike' and a second bite soon followed, with the conclusion of the bout coming at the end of that third round.
Tyson was DQ'd and the entire world was left scratching their heads as to what had just taken place.
If you like a little bit of insane drama in your sports every now and again, then boxing (and this bout in particular) will be right up your street.
