10 Darkest Spurs Moments Of The Premier League Era

7. The Food Poisoning Incident

Spurs have had so many near-misses in the Premier League era. Since the turn of the millennium, the club has finished fifth in the league table no less than four times €“ one place below the Champions League positions €“ and also missed out on the Champions League despite finishing fourth, thanks to the aforementioned Champions League victory by Chelsea. However, most infamously, they missed out on the last day of the 2005€“06 season, when a win against West Ham United would have guaranteed them fourth place. However, the team was struck down with food poisoning and tried to have the match suspended. The F.A. refused, Spurs lost 2-1 and their bitter rivals Arsenal would go on to take fourth place with a 4-2 win at home to Wigan Athletic. It was truly heartbreaking for Spurs, as a season's worth of hard work was undone by something a freak incident that was completely out of their hands.
