10 Excruciatingly Awkward UFC Post Fight Interviews
6. Yoel Romero Talks About Jesus
Going back to the well of "fighters cutting promos in a second language" it wasn't so much what Yoel Romero said, it was more what people thought he said. While his delivery and difficulty with the English language wasn't exactly ideal, the finish of this interview sparked numerous memes, but one large controversy.
After defeating Lyoto Machida in 2015, Romero would address the Floridian crowd, and call them out for abandoning Christianity. While Florida has an admittedly lower Christian population than most states, approximately 50% of Florida residents are Christians. So that was a little strange. And we were only just getting started.
Romero asked Miami to listen to what he had to say, which would have been cool if he wasn't in Orlando. He did apologise for the fact he was trying English and hoped the people would understand him.
The rest of the interview is almost impossible to transcribe, but he finished by saying "no forget Jesus people." Unfortunately, everyone in the arena and watching at home thought Romero said "no for gay Jesus" and many wondered if he was taking a swipe at Florida's LGBT community.
What made this especially controversial is that just the day before, gay marriage was legalised in Florida, so many assumed Romero's alleged "gay Jesus" comment was related to the ruling. Romero dispelled those sentiments quickly, but terrible timing and a second language faux pas marred a big victory.
