10 Famous World Cup Moments Involving Newcastle Players

5. John Barnes vs Argentina (1986)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZNhyyLFd_Ys Sir Bobby Robson neglected to use a 22-year-old Barnes until the quarter-final duel with old enemies Argentina and even then it was only for a 15 minutes cameo when England were already trailing 2-0 to Diego Maradona's contentious 'Hand of God' goal and his marvellous second dubbed as the 'Goal of the Century'. It turned out to be an inspired move by Robson and prompted commentator Barry Davies to abandon his post an impartial narrator of the game and famously shout: "Go on, run at them!" when Barnes picked up the ball. Putting the Argentinian's on the back foot with his speed and direct running, he supplied the cross for Gary Linekar's consolation and almost grabbed another assist with another lofted delivery that Linekar was unable to convert under pressure from Julio Olarticoechea as the Three Lions bowed out in controversial circumstances. In 2013 Barnes, somewhat surprisingly, revealed to the Daily Mail that it ranked as the highlight of his international career ahead of iconic goal he scored against Brazil two years previous. "I€™d say the game against Argentina in the World Cup quarter-finals in 1986 was bigger I only played 16 minutes but I did well," he said. "Nobody really remembers the Brazil game and not everyone will have seen the goal."
