During the 2006/07 season, Joey Barton's form was at its peak for Stuart Pearce's Manchester City. As a player who's always in the football press, it wasn't long before rumblings and mumblings began that he could do a job for the national side. On 7 February 2007, Steve McClaren substituted him on in a friendly against Spain, replacing Frank Lampard - a player Barton had previously criticised in the press.
England would lose the game 1-0 that day, capping a muddy, scrappy affair where they were clearly the weaker side. A curling effort from Iniesta finished them off and Barton was not picked for any future international squads.His only future involvement with the team being him berating them several times in the press as they spent the next few tournaments producing sub-standard displays to the chagrin of their nation.
