Off to New Zealand now, and a Heartland’s Championship match between Mid-Canterbury and North Otago. With Mid-Canterbury having just scored North Otago come back to the halfway line to restart the match with a drop kick (not to be confused with the wrestling variety of drop kick, which might not go down well on a rugby pitch).

It’s a very windy day and the advised approach when kicking off under such circumstances is to hit the kick low and hard to limit the effects of the weather. Unfortunately nobody seems to have told this to the North Otago out-half, who instead put up a high, hanging kick into the stiff oncoming breeze. Not only does the strength of the wind cause the ball to go back behind the kicker, it actually manages to carry the ball all the way back and off the field of play. I guess you could say the ball was ‘Gone with the Wind’. Don’t worry, I’ll see myself out…
