10 Glorious Scotland International Football Failures

6. England 0-1 Scotland (17 November 1999)

Wait, what is a Scotland win doing on this list? Against England no less! Well, as a two-legged playoff game, Scotland had already done irreparable damage at Hampden four days earlier, going down 2-0 to a Paul Scholes double. It had been a spirited display in Glasgow, but Scotland came south with no reward and it all to do.

Perhaps this game was a sign of what was to come for England, who were knocked out in the group stage in very Scottish fashion. After chucking a two goal lead against the Portuguese to lose 3-2 in the opener, England defeated Germany thanks to an Alan Shearer header. Needing just a draw against Romania in the final game to qualify, England surrendered a 2-1 lead to lose 3-2 again and were eliminated in a way Scotland could sympathise with, if it wasn't too busy laughing about it.

England were terrible at Wembley. Neil McCann's cross was headed home by Don Hutchison, but England still didn't up their game. Scotland's only real chance after that was Christian Dailly's header which was well saved by David Seaman. The save which has been lionised as being better than it was in truth, but it still remains part of Scottish football folklore. Much like his elbow at Euro 96 from Gary McAllister's penalty.
