10 Glorious Scotland International Football Failures

5. Faroe Islands 2-2 Scotland (7 September 2002)

It was the opening game of Euro 2004 qualifying, and Scotland had been paired with Germany, Iceland, Lithuania, and the Faroe Islands. While winning the group was unlikely, second place should have been in the bank, starting with vanquishing the minnows.

While Scotland had drawn at this stadium previously, it had been a last minute equaliser in a game that Scotland totally dominated and just couldn't find a second goal. Embarrassing sure, but these things happen.

With 12 minutes played, the worst embarrassment in the history of the national team looked a real possibility. Primary school teacher John Petersen's quick fire double had the Faroese two up, and he really should have netted his hat-trick just before half time. "I was surprised at how bad Scotland were," remarked Petersen after the game. Indeed.

Second half goals by Paul Lambert and Barry Ferguson rescued a pretty undeserved draw in the Berti Vogts era that everyone just wants to put behind them.
