The Aston Villa striker's playing days came to an end in the 2000–01 season after breaking his leg following a clash with Ipswich Town goalkeeper Richard Wright.

The collision left him with a double compound fracture of his right shin. At one point the injury became infected and Nilis feared a possible amputation.
