10 Hardest Men That Ever Played For Liverpool

4. Steve McMahon

One of the rare players who spent time at both Everton and Liverpool, without either set of fans excommunicating him for his transgressions, McMahon alternated between being a totally bully on the pitch and scarpering as soon as any similar challenges headed his way. That however could've been down to his assuming that everybody went in as hard as he did for tackles, with the Scouse midfielder earning a reputation for tackles that connected with flesh more than leather, with said playing style eventually playing a crucial role in Liverpool's "double" winning side of his debut 1985 season. Like Lawrenson, McMahon is now better known for his career as a television pundit for for Asia-based ESPN Star Sports, based in Singapore, recruiting fellow ex-Liverpool players like Ian Rush and Steve McManaman into the fold as well. He's gone a little soft in his old age but when he was at the height of his powers, there was nary a more formidable player in the game. Even Vinnie Jones, best remembered for being a violent nutter, said at the time that McMahon was the only one who could possibly take him down; when the Wimbledon player went up against Anfield's "top man", he wound up with an elbow in the eye and a scar that lasts on his charming mug to this day.
