10 Most Humiliating World Cup Defeats

3. USA 1-0 England

/AP/Press Association Images/AP/Press Association ImagesYou just knew England would crop up on a list like this at some point. The most humiliating defeat in England's history, no less. In 1950, long before the establishment of the MLS as a globally accepted and respected league, a team of amateur and semi-professional footballers from the US beat the mother of football, England. To put this into perspective, you need to imagine what it would be like if Barnsley had beaten Bayern Munich to understand what this result meany back then. The US lineup consisted of a postman, a mill worker and a funeral director, while manager Walter Winterbottom's side had some of the greatest players in our history - Stan Mortensen, Stanley Matthews and Tom Finney - at his disposal. It should have been a whitewash. It wasn't. England dominated the opening exchanges and looked comfortable against their far-less illustrious opponents, until Larry Gaetjens scored in the 37th minute. Winterbottom's side couldn't find a way back into the game, and the Three Lions lost 1-0. It was the single-most embarrassing moment in England's history, and the result has a lasting legacy even today. England played in blue shirts that day in the mining town of Belo Horizonte - and after the defeat to America they never played in blue again.
