10 Most Successful Formula One Constructors Of All Time
8. Brabham
Initially, the Brabham cars were called MRD's (Motor Racing Developments) until someone pointed out that, if said rapidly in French, it sounded like something dogs did on the pavement. The name was quickly changed to Brabham.
Brabham's first success came in a season where a new 3-litre formula was introduced. Brabham, having had an engine built by Repco, went on to secure both World Championships. The following season the legendary Ford-DFV engine was introduced, but its lack of consistency allowed the still Repco-shod Brabham of Denny Hulme to beat his teammate, Jack Brabham, to the title for the team's second and last Championship win.
They continued to have success, though. In 1978, the team, now owned by Bernie Ecclestone, signed Nelson Piquet, and he went on to win two Drivers Championships in the Brabham. Unfortunately, on neither occasion could the team win the Constructors' Championship, losing out to Williams and Ferrari respectably.
The team carried on before being removed by Ecclestone in 1987. It returned in 1989 only to be uncompetitive and an embarrassment, before leaving F1 forever in 1992.
