Renault has a long and successful past in Formula One.

Renault's initial entry into the sport was spectacular and certainly upset the apple cart. Upon entering in 1977, the series was dominated by 3-litre normally-aspirated engines, however, 1.5 Turbo cars were allowed, but they were seen to be inferior. Renault thought otherwise, and while they did not achieve Championship success during their first stint in F1, they ushered in the turbo-era, the era when Formula One was at its most exciting.

Eventually, Renault became solely an engine manufacturer and saw great success thanks to its partnership with the Williams team in the 1990s until pulling out of Formula One in 1997. It wouldn't last.

By 2002 Renault was back as a works team. And in 2005 they achieved their ambition that started in 1977. With Fernando Alonso in the cockpit, they won the Drivers and Constuctors' Championship back-to-back in 2005 and 2006. Alonso would then leave, return, then leave again, and in that time, Renault never got close to the Championship.

In 2010 they once again quit the sport, before returning again in 2016 looking to take the fight to Mercedes, Red Bull, and Ferrari.
