Could it be anyone else? If I tried to run down this man's list of achievements, this article would be massive.

Schumacher's ability was there from the very beginning. When he burst onto the scene at the notoriously difficult Belgian Grand Prix, it was clear that a special talent was among the paddock. Yet, no one could possibly have known how successful he would be. Least of all himself.

Another polarising personality (join the club) Schumacher's will to win was unmatched and sometimes led him astray, notably at Jerez in 1997 where he deliberately crashed into title rival Jaques Villeneuve, causing him to be excluded from that year's championship.

His ability saw him take a competitive but unfancied Benetton to two consecutive world titles, beating the mighty Williams-Renault in the process.

The way he changed the fortunes of Ferrari is possibly his greatest achievement. Turning a team that had not won a drivers' championship since 1979 into the most dominant team in Formula One history was remarkable. During his time there, he won Five World Championships and 72 races, many in commanding fashion. It was pure, unadulterated domination, the likes of which may never be seen again.

Even though his later years were marred by mediocrity, his legacy will last well into the future.
