10 Players You Didn't Know Hull Almost Signed

6. Michael Owen

When a striker of the calibre of Michael Owen is reduced to sending out a brochure to potential employers documenting his strengths, it's fair to assume that he wasn't overly enthused about becoming Hull City's marquee signing. It was the summer of 2009, and the Newcastle captain had just dusted his hands off and traipsed off a Villa Park pitch without even a bead of sweat having broke out on his forehead, whilst the club who had handsomely paid the injury-prone 'superstar's' wages for the previous four years were relegated for the first time in 16 years. Suitors were not falling over themselves to sign a player who had treated the relegation dogfight with such apathy. He has since admitted that he spent the summer pleading for a return to Anfield, but when they spurned the opportunity to sign him, the desperate frontman decided to destroy any relationship he might have still had on Merseyside by agreeing to become a bit-part player at Old Trafford. A move filled with contempt, for sure, but it wasn't as if he had many other options.
''We'll speak to him within a week. I wouldn't sit down with him if I thought I was wasting my time. I don't think Michael will go for the best financial offer, I don't think it's about that for him at this stage of his career, he'll want the best offer for his future. He needs to spend a high percentage of next season's games at the highest possible level and that's where we come in.'' - Phil Brown, July 2009.
Well, you've got to admire their ambition.
