10 Players Who Were Forced Out Of Old Trafford

6. Danny Welbeck

Another one who failed to escape the harsh sting of elimination from the Manchester United squad at the hands of the ruthless Louis van Gaal, the former Red Devils trainee will probably not have appreciated the manner of his exit. Receiving a parting barb from the Dutchman that he 'wasn't prolific enough', Welbeck may well have deemed it an unfair appraisal considering the amount of time he had spent meandering on the wing under van Gaal's predecessors. Nevertheless, Welbeck's goal ratio at the club was certainly nothing to write home about, even taking into account his being played out of position. Indeed, he has never hit double figures in the league and two seasons ago, he registered a paltry goal from 27 appearances. However, under Ferguson, there never seemed to be a danger of Welbeck being shunted - there was always the promise of him blossoming into a promising number nine for the Red Devils, which is probably why his sudden departure for the Emirates Stadium came as such a shock to the supporters. Not one for sentiment, van Gaal instantly deemed the 23 year old not good enough for his revamped side, and packaged him to the Gunners in a £16 million deal. Welbeck will feel that he was boxed out of the club with the high-profile arrival of Radamel Falcao from Monaco on deadline day paving the way for his exit. With a plethora of attacking talent at their disposal, including the likes of Wayne Rooney, Robin van Persie, Angel di Maria and Juan Mata, the England international took the hint and packed his bags for a hopefully brighter future in London.
