10 Players Spurs Kept For Too Long

5. Ledley King

If Gary Mabbutt is a Spurs legend, Ledley King is a Spurs god. An extremely talented central defender, King was a rarity in modern football - a one-club man. He came through the youth ranks at Spurs, only ever played for Spurs and continues to be an ambassador for Spurs to this day. All that said, for his own benefit, King should not have been kept on as a player for so long. Everyone familiar with football is aware of King's injury issues. He had a chronic knee problem that meant he couldn't even train in the latter stages of his career. He had no cartilage in his knees, so all of the impact of running was bone on bone. Although those facts mean that it was remarkable that he was still able to play at the top level, it also won't have done him any good to have played under those conditions. King made 268 league appearances for Spurs €“ which would have been so much more had he not suffered from his knee problems €“ but it should have been a lot less for the sake of his own health.
