10 Players Who Stole A Living From Liverpool

1. Alberto Aquilani

We've made it to number one, and although all of the players on this list could all be accused of not repaying Liverpool during their time there, there are none who have failed to deliver quite as much as Alberto Aquilani. When Xabi Alonso was sold to Real Madrid in the summer of 2009- a transfer that many Reds fans still find it hard to talk about- it was vital that Benitez replaced him with a similarly world-class midfield playmaker. Instead, he signed an injury-prone player who, despite being talented, lacked a physical edge to be a success in the Premier League. The club spent £17.1m on his services, and paid him £70,000 a week. The Italian didn't make his debut until late October 2009, having been suffering from an ankle injury for seven months, and he never came close to having the influence that the brilliant Alonso did. He had the odd good display here and there, but ended the season with just 26 appearances to his name. In 2010/11, with Roy Hodgson now unforgivably at the helm, he was shipped off to Juventus, while the following year he was loaned out to Milan. When Rodgers arrived in the summer of 2012, Aquilani stated he wanted to remain at Liverpool, but he failed to impress during pre-season. He was once against deemed surplus to requirements, and finally left for good after signing for Fiorentina. Liverpool had reportedly been paying a part of his salary during his loan spells, and the money he cost them in relation to how little he did on the pitch was just ridiculous. It was a woeful signing on Benitez's part, but Aquilani still had to do more. No Reds player has stolen a living quite like him. We'd love to hear your top 10.
