It's worth asking why Sunderland fans bother with all the torture and heartbreak. Switching allegiances to support another team is obviously out of the question, but why don't they simply try to care a bit less - it would certainly lead to a more secure state of mind. The simple answer is because the club has a way of providing the most magical moments at the most surprising of times. Every fan has at least one memory of a particularly amazing moment, something which seemed to forever validate their decision to support Sunderland. With such stories inevitably come tales of injury celebrations, scrapes and bruises caused by the incredible scenes which follow a huge goal at the Stadium of Light (or away from home, especially in the case of Bardsley's scuffed semi-final finish at Old Trafford).
