7. When Newcastle Were Relegated In 2009 They Had An Interim Manager At The Helm

Interim managers and Newcastle United do not seem to marry together well - because the last time the Magpies were relegated they also had a temporary boss at the helm. Club legend Alan Shearer was brought in on a temporary basis to save the day following Joe Kinnear's illness - but the former England captain could not prevent Newcastle's slide into the Championship. Shearer won just one of his eight games in charge in 2008-09, and Newcastle finished in 18th. John Carver, meanwhile, took over the reins from Alan Pardew with Newcastle safe in mid-table - and yet the interim head coach has overseen a rapid descent down the Premier League that has left the Magpies just two points ahead of 18th-placed Hull with a game to go.
