Could there be anything else? It started a dynasty, paved the way for Tom Brady to be one of the best quarterbacks of all time...and yet how was that not a fumble? You look over this again and again and come to a few conclusions. Tom Brady did in fact try to throw the ball. He stopped, and drew the ball to himself. The ball flew out of his hands when the only receiver he could've thrown the ball too had to have been three feet underground. And if this is all true and legal...why aren't quarterbacks repeating that motion the entire play? They'll never deal with a fumble again! This play set up the Patriots' dyansty of the 2000s, and everyone once again had to deal with the Raiders saying they were cheated out of a victory. Thank you, refs, for all you do.
