3. The Immaculate Reception
Before I get into this play, I have to admit that I am a Steelers fan. I love the team, and furthermore I love this play. Taken at face value, Franco Harris is seemingly sent by God to bring the Steelers out of squalor and into the promised land, defeating the dark thugs of the league, the Oakland Raiders. And it was an unbelievable play. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7xMDIcsUMmA Did the ball touch the ground, making it incomplete? Did the ball touch Running back "Frenchy" Fuqua's hands? Did Harris run out of bounds? And did the refs even consider any of this before calling the play? So many questions that have for the most part been debated without answer for over forty years. Now, while it's a good controversy, how does this affect the legacy of football? Because Steelers fans never shut up about it! In the center of Pittsburgh's airport is a statue of Franco Harris catching the football. The football for the Immaculate Reception is in a steel vault. And every year, until every single person who was around that game is long gone, we will have to endure the controversy that is the Immaculate Reception.
