10 Rule Changes That Should Be Made In Sport
3. False Start Rule In Athletics
Once upon a time, athletes were able to commit a false start and get a second chance but soon after the turn of the Millennium, athletes were disqualified after moving out of their blocks before the gun and their dreams of a medal gone for another year.
Some will argue that it is part and parcel of the sport but after months of training, to be told you cannot compete in your chosen race because you moved a split-second too early out of your blocks is extremely harsh and it's time that the old rule was brought back with an amendment.
It's understandable that the governing bodies wanted to avoid farcical situations that could potentially see seven or eight false starts before the race got underway but bringing back the two-false-start rule with the condition that the whole field will be penalised after three failed attempts would work
It's not ideal and still penalises the athletes who remain in their blocks but a happy medium needs to be found. The harsh rules in place right now can lead to anti-climaxes - such as the one that saw Usain Bolt disqualified in the 100m final in 2011 - so it seems a no-brainer to try to protect each race by changing the current ruling.
