10 Rule Changes That Should Be Made In Sport
2. Slow Play In Golf Penalised By Dropped Shots
One of the hottest topics of conversation in the golf world is the subject of slow play and while attempts are being made to speed up the action, more can still be done.
The European Tour introduced a revised policy at the start of 2016 but the punishment decided upon included fines that will not hit the bank balance of the top players. It effectively gives them leeway to take that extra few seconds to make a shot if they feel that the potential reward is greater than the punishment and that's not how things should go down.
Only the threat of dropped shots is going to speed up play. We've all seen the mind-numbing amount of time that Jordan Spieth has been taking over some of his putts of late and the methodical, twitchy procedure that Keegan Bradley adopts when lining up shots on the fairway but this has got to stop.
More players than Spieth and Bradley are guilty of this and both tours need to take a zero-tolerance approach in order to ensure players spend less time preparing their shots.
The European Tour have spoken about their desire for rounds to be played in 15 minutes less than is the current average but that will never be achieved unless they introduce penalties that every player will want to avoid.
