10 Shocking Incidents Luis Suarez Wants You To Forget

7. The Dive In Front Of Moyes (And Numerous Others!)

Luis Suarez is one of the very worst divers in world football. He came to Liverpool with the reputation of being a bit of a cheat (see later point on the 2010 World Cup!), but no one expected that reputation to be so significantly enhanced during his first few seasons in England. You might have thought his new club would have clued the Uruguayan up to the nature of the british game, cheating and diving are frowned upon, but Suarez seemed adamant to play his style - which basically involved throwing himself down at any opportunity to con the ref. This quickly became tiresome and pundits across the british media expressed concern with the precedent Suarez was setting. Nobody wants to see blatant dives and handballs. Luis in contrast was unconcerned of his growing negative reputation, culminating in him actually making light of it in one infamous goal celebration. The game was Liverpool vs Everton in October 2012. Earlier in the week Everton manager David Moyes had called into question Suarez's cheating, noting that "divers" were putting people off the English game. How did the Uruguayan respond? He scored against Everton, ran up to Moyes' dugout, and threw himself down to mock a dive. The classless move quickly drew condemnation. Just a short time later, Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers branded Suarez "unacceptable" after the player admitted to diving to win penalty kicks. To Suarez, diving and cheating are just part of his world, "I was accused of falling inside the box in a match and it's true I did it that time, because we were drawing against Stoke at home and we needed anything to win it." he told Argentinian media in 2013.
