10 Shocking Liverpool Departures Nobody Expected

8. Jonjo Shelvey

With a head like an orange and a right leg like a traction engine, it's likely you'd notice Jonjo Shelvey's absence. Which is why it was such a shock when the young midfielder took of from Liverpool after a fruitful few seasons with the team from 2010-2013, after a youth career spent mainly with Charlton Athletic. Before long he was promoted to the first team, and even after going out on loan to Blackpool he was quickly called back to help patch over an injury crisis that seemed to be plaguing half the Kop. From there the team began to treat him with the sort of respect he deserved, as he racked up 47 appearances and even managed a handful of successful strikes himself, despite mainly playing as a defensive midfielder. Fans felt fairly confident in watching his continuing development when he signed a long-term deal in 2012, only for him to go and swap it for a four-year contract with Swansea City. The very season that former Swans manager Brendan Rodgers took up the reins at Liverpool, coincidentally.
